I have 67 APPS on Facebook. It is so easy to allow all the different websites online to Sign-Up and Sign-In using Facebook. This allows Facebook to track everything I do online. If you actually switch over to Bing.com, a search engine similar to google.com, you can see what all your friends like. There are pictures next to websites. Bing has a partnership with Facebook. It is all being tracked.
I was curious at the difference so I searched on “EdgySocialMedia.” First on Bing and then on Google.
Try it out for your own company! Go to BING and search for your name or favorite ice cream and the go to GOOGLE.
You can see where my friend’s on Facebook liked my Facebook site. On Google you can also see I have myself a +1 button. At the time, I really wasn’t sure what I was doing but now that I look back it probably doesn’t look very cool that I am the only one that +1 my pages.
If you have a minute, please feel free to search for EdgySocialMedia on GOOGLE and +1 me. At the moment it’s a little like being the only one that liked your Fan Page! Feel free to leave a comment down below on your company’s name and I’ll search for it and +1 it!!!! Check out this quick video I made on +1.
Why does this matter? People are worried Facebook and other major brands are tracking their every move. I was creeped out before by just watching TV: CHECK THIS OUT.
The final question. Do we take worry about Privacy, Technological Changes and Who Knows What You Say/Watch/Where/When? I have stay informed and be thoughtful in what I post.
Looking forward to your comments! Sign up for our Edgy News!

P.S. There’s a contest going on at my Fan Page until I reach 10,000 Fans (about 250 to go!) Come check it out to WIN and new Graphically Designed Timeline! *No Templates FACEBOOK
The Facebook Timeline is being rolled out. I have had it for over a month and have researched, listened to others in the technology field and played around with the settings. While you are getting used to is, I wanted to give you a glimpse of how I have mine set and why:
WHERE TO GO
Click the top right hand size of your Facebook page (the arrow next to Home).
Go to Privacy Settings, under Account Settings
Go to “How Tags Work” link
HOW TAGS WORK
Timeline Review: OFF - I want to approve what photos I get tagged in before it is posted to my Timeline (too many crazy late night photos!)
Tag Review: ON – I want to review all tags related to me before they are posted
Maximum Timeline Visibility: FRIENDS OF FRIENDS – If I’ve approved it then Friends of friends is OK
Tag Suggestion: OFF – Facebook will try and recognize my photo and suggest my name so friends tag me? I just don’t want Facebook to start recognizing the patterns in my Face? Getting a little creepy for me)
Friends can check you Into Place: YES - You will be notified if someone checks you in so I don’t have a problem with this.
Over the last year I have heard countless times to know your INFLUENCERS; put them on lists. This has been one of my hardest areas of growth because I don’t want to make friends because of what I can get from them. My friendships and relationships mean everything. However, recently I skyped a friend and he took me back in time to my coffeehouse days. He stated, “Were there relationships you made with other people in your industry that could help you. Perhaps they were better then you at making coffee, growing coffee, tricks with coffee?”
Everything changed. I got it. There were even people on my Facebook PAGE as friends that were influencers – right under my nose every day and I am not paying attention (some people can name drop here – I just can’t bring myself too). After much maneuvering with the new LISTS feature on Facebook I discovered a trick.
3 ITEMS
LISTS are a way to keep your friends/family/co-workers/etc organized. Plus, you can filter the information that goes out and comes in to specific people.
CLOSE FRIENDS is where you are supposed to add your best friends so you receive EACH TIME THEY POST
Facebook does NOT notify a person when they are put on your CLOSE FRIENDS list.
The TRICK
The trick is simple and quick. Take the people that are influential ”cool, edgy, people that can help you in your business plus you can learn so much for them” and add them to your CLOSE FRIENDS list.
PLUS, add YOUR CUSTOMERS to the CLOSE FRIENDS list. Give them the attention they deserve. Don’t miss anything.
HOW
Go to the person’s page that is a friend.
There is a Friends box with a check mark next to it.
Highlight over it and move the checkmark to the top choice which is called CLOSE FRIENDS.
After you do this, that friend will have a gold star next to it.
This has had amazing results!!!
I have received more business, less overhead expense and better relationships w/interesting people.
Looking Forward!

I posted this Tip in Mari Smith’s Facebook Group and the post above was her response! Btw, you get to see a whole new, very cool Mari in this group and the knowledge has saved me $100′s a month in research. Right now, I believe she’s doing this free series w/the promotion of her book and at the end opening up the Inner Circle for a short time! MARI SMITH’S INNER CIRCLE
Over and over I keep having clients and acquaintances say to me, “I wish people would quit posting everything they do all day long. Nobody cares if someone went to Starbucks – AGAIN!” I decided once and for all I would explain some of the main reasons for checking in and perhaps shed some light.
I have a group of friends in downtown Clematis; a hip-fun area people gather to work and hangout. In this local community, the friends are constantly checking in as a form of staying in contact. If Friend 1, Sees that Friend 2 and Friend 3 is at Starbucks because they checked in on Foursquare, then Friend 1 can take a quick break from work and run down and grab a cup of joe. Hang with friends. It happens during happy hour, for events, 50% of sales, favorite stores and it makes community incredibly vibrant.
I have a a couple of friends that write for the paper and they know everything that is going on around town. I follow everything they are doing for their checkins and am very excited to see what’s hot in my neighborhood! It greatly increases my life’s journey.
Many times I am at a clients location when I check in and it is giving clients props. I want to make sure they get exposure and ranking. I comment and possibly add a photo.
Checking in to different technical events (in my case) or other business events and locations that may be important to my career shows the world that my company is building. I am giving them a glimpse and a reason to have confidence. If you are a Dentist, perhaps you are speaking at a conference, meeting with a new Dentist in the community or a vendor that has the latest technology. It shows your clients, you are staying on top of your game. Makes us feel confident in your abilities.
There is a game element to it. Many people truly enjoy it for this reason and businesses will reward them for their patronage.
If you go to foursquare, you can actually find out quite a bit about a person. I just checked out a friends’ site and found out they went to the beach 4 times recently, 6 times at a wine bar (who knew?) and enjoys the Packers.
My daughter and I checking in at Starbucks in Seattle about to “Ride the Duck”.
We checked in/on there, too!
STILL ANNOYED? – A Tip
I get it. If this all makes sense to you then go do it! Download the FREE foursquare app and start checking in. However, if you are rolling your eyes because this is just not your thing, then I have a tip. If you do not want to see what is happening in this community, there are many options to see less posts on Facebook. If you highlight the right side of a Facebook post you will see a downward V. You can subscribe to someone:

If you click Only Important, it will decrease the posts dramatically.
CONCLUSION
Hopefully, this sheds some light onto why people checkin so much. Once you get used to it, many people are finding it enhances many facets of their work/life balance.
If you check in regularly, please comment below on how it helps you and tell me what badges you have! I’d love to hear from you. Thanks!
